Who are the Disco Amigos?

The Disco Amigos are a co-ed social aid and boogie club dedicated to preserving the dance, music and culture of Disco. Our mission is to create, produce and perform interactive events that invoke freedom of creativity and collaboration to evoke pleasure and enhance people’s lives.

That sounds great, but what do y’all do?

We offer weekly practices to learn Disco steps and routines, create performances for events, and develop platforms to showcase creative talent in New Orleans. We also produce Disco themed events, support our community and dance in parades. Oh, we’re also going to host the Guinness Book’s Worlds Largest Disco in the Superdome!

I’m intrigued, but why Disco?

Call it what you will - disco fever, the disco revolution, or simply disco with a capital “D”. The disco atmosphere combined brilliant colors, flashing lights, and hard driving music to form a unique dance and party environment for all ages, races and backgrounds. We believe it is time for a Disco resurrection to capture the imagination, to infuse people with its mystique and fun, and to bring entertainment to all!

Sounds like fun. Have I seen y’all perform at an event or parade?

Since 2012, we brought Disco to the fans of the Krewe of Carrollton, Krewe of Tucks, Krewe of Nyx, Krewe of Cleopatra, Krewe of Orpheus and the inaugural ride of Krewe of Freret with Dancing Man 504. We’ve also paraded in Festigals, Krewe de Boo and the Southern Decadence Parade. We also dance and party in major cultural events like the Running of the Bulls, Mid Summer Mardi Gras, and Krewe of Kolossus’ July 4th Boat Parade and produce our own events like Friday Night Dance Parties (FNDP) and the New Orleans Zephyrs’ Disco Resurrection baseball game.

Do y’all support any other organizations?

The Disco Amigos are down with helping the community get the dance party started. We’ve performed at events for many non-profit and charity organizations like DSAGNO, Hope Stone, Miracle League, Locks of Love, Autism Society, and Jefferson SPCA, among others. We also give monetary and in-kind donations to help those organizations prosper. Tell me more about this ‘creative platform’ you mentioned? I thought y’all just danced in parades? The Disco Amigos were formed to provide a collaborative creative and performance outlet for anyone who has an idea, vision or crazy inspiration to share with the world. Keeping with New Orleans’ creative and satirical tradition, we are always looking for ways to relive the retro feel of the 70’s (the greatest decade ever) and laugh at ourselves while doing so. We welcome anyone to share and develop their “70’s-styled” idea through the Disco Amigos including music, bands and DJ sets; film and video projects; photography and graphic arts; stage and lighting effects; costumes, fashion and make-up; visual arts; and, any other groovy thing to invoke the imagination and evoke the senses.

I want to be an Amigo! How do I join? Are there auditions or an application process?

We’re open to anyone who wants to be a part of the Disco-lucion! There is no audition or application process - just a desire to be funky. We hold New Member Orientations on the 4th Monday of every month at 7:00pm at the Deutsches Haus, but you are welcome to stop by any practice or event and see what we’re all about. To be ready for the 2015 Mardi Gras season, all Amigos need to join and start attending practices by November 3rd.

Perfect! When and where do you practice? I want to get started! Let’s learn to Disco - and let’s get started right NOW! We meet Monday nights from 7:30-9:30pm at the Deutsches Haus off Airline Drive. Fill out this New Member Info Form so we know who you are and come join the party.

Do I need to be a good dancer to join?

Don’t worry - if you can walk, you can dance. All great dancers exhibit three qualities: a love of music; a sense of rhythm; and, a willingness to learn, loosen up, and let go. Disco music is almost instinctive, rhythm is acquired, and if you participate and practice, you too can become positively irresistible! I want to join, but don’t want to dance or don’t think I’m creative. Is there a place for me in the organization? Of course! We are always welcoming folks that want to help support, develop and execute our performances, events and parades. You’ll surprise yourself once you decide to show up, get engaged and let loose - magical shit is going to happen!
